Is Formply waterproof? Guide to Plywood
One of a number of technologically advanced structural plywoods to enter the market in recent years, Formply is a versatile material that can be used in a number of different circumstances. Durable and strong, it's suitable for use in anything from a major construction project through to shelving and other fixtures in a retail fit-out. Here we take a look at Formply in more detail.
Read on to discover what it is, what it can be used for, and the advantages that using Formply can bring.
What is Formply?
Formply is a type of plywood, that benefits from a laminated face. The lamination gives the product a number of additional qualities to those seen in standard construction or form plywoods. The lamination is premium-grade phenolic resin impregnated sheets of paper. These laminated sheets of paper adhere to the outside of the plywood layers, creating a number of additional benefits to the product.
Plywood is created from several thin sheets of wood, which are glued together at right angles to one another (perpendicular). This results in a strong sheet of material, that is resistant to cracking when nails are used on it, and which also is less likely to shrink or warp during use.
Formply is a structural plywood. A structural plywood can be used on projects where a strong material is a requirement. Formply is made using glue that creates an A-bond: the strongest type of plywood bond. What this means is that Formply is an exceptionally strong plywood that can be used in construction, as well as for projects where less strength is required. A-bond glue is formulated to be resistant to temperature changes (so Formply won't become brittle or weakened by repeated temperature changes).
A bond glue is also designed to remain strong in wet conditions. This means that the structure and performance of Formply isn't affected if it's immersed in water.
What can Formply be used for?
One of the major benefits of Formply is its flexibility. Some of the uses for Formply include:
- To form a mould for concrete on construction sites
- Beams
- Bridges and related civil engineering projects
- Cabinetry
- Furniture
- Benches or shelves
Formply can be particularly useful for these when there is a possibility that the shelves or bench might need to bear a heavy load. Compliance with AS 6669 ensures Formply is a strong material that delivers excellent results.
What are the advantages of Formply?
Made to meet Australian standard (AS) 6669
AS 6669 is the standard which governs plywoods. Compliance with this standard means that Formply is a plywood product that will deliver high performance, particularly in challenging situations. AS 6669 is a structural rating. The fact that Formply holds this rating means that it can be safely used in load-bearing applications.
Waterproof
The addition of the laminated layer to the plywood core results in a sheet that's waterproof. This means that it can be used for exterior applications. whilst Formply isn't as waterproof as marine grade ply (the glues used in this type of ply can withstand hours of boiling and water immersion without weakening), it's still durable enough to be used where it will get wet.
Weatherproof
The glue used to make Formply, along with the laminated exterior, ensures that the product is immune to the effects of repeated heating and cooling, as well as strong enough to cope with wind. Formply can withstand UV light and is also suitable for use in environments where it may come into contact with salt water. All these properties ensure Formply can be used on construction sites with great results.
Resistant to wear and tear
Part of the reason that Formply meets AS 6669 is the degree of structural strength which it has. This is what makes it suitable for use on supporting structures and related functions. The additional, laminated layer that coats the Formply protects the plywood core from a considerable amount of casual wear and tear, helping to prolong its life span.
Range of colours available
Formply is a material that bridges the gap between construction plys and architectural plys, as it is available in a number of different colours. This means that it can be used in visible locations where visual appeal is a priority, or where there is a need to differentiate different parts of a project through the use of different colours.
Waterproof, weatherproof, strong and durable, Formply is a versatile material that can be used for a wide range of projects. Jaybro stock a good selection of Formply products, suitable for both interior and exterior projects.
