The project:

In July 2020, work began on a $4m project to install floating pontoons at Westport Port. This project comes as part of an $8.5 million funding package that aims to help secure the West Coast’s fishing industry, which contributes approximately $35m to New Zealand’s GDP every year.

The Westport fishing precinct is undergoing a number of repair and expansion projects to enable it to better handle bulk exports of heavy mineral sands and an upgrade of the nearby fish processing facilities.

This part of the project is focused on installing floating pontoons at Greymouth and Westport Ports, thanks to the $4m funding package allocated to Buller District Council.

The challenges:

Specialist construction firm Bellingham Marine is in the process of installing floating pontoons that can better accommodate the local fishing fleet.

The contractors have been retained to install a series of floating pontoons and gangways, however before any work could begin at Westport the team needed to ensure the site was safe and secure.

The solution:
