Manawatū Tararua Highway – Jaybro’s Role in Drainage Solutions

Manawatū Tararua Highway – Jaybro’s Role in Drainage Solutions

In April 2017, a massive slip made State Highway 3 through the Manawatū Gorge impassable. To restore a critical link between the regions of Woodville and Ashhurst, a new highway was commissioned to traverse the Ruahine Range. This new route will offer a safe, resilient, and efficient alternative for traffic in the region.

The Te Ahu a Turanga Alliance was tasked with this crucial infrastructure project, which is set to be completed by mid-2025. As part of the works, ensuring proper drainage and runoff management is essential due to the highway's elevation and the challenging terrain of the Ruahine Range.

Jaybro’s Contribution

Jaybro was selected to supply 550 meters of MEA Drain Monolithic DSM2000, a high-performance drainage solution designed for heavy-duty applications. The DSM2000 is a 200mm-wide drain with robust construction, ideal for managing surface water in environments like highways and industrial roads where efficient water management is critical for long-term pavement durability and safety.

Why the MEA Drain DSM2000?

The rugged landscape of the Ruahine Range requires drainage systems that can withstand harsh conditions while maintaining efficiency over time. The MEA Drain Monolithic DSM2000 provides several advantages:

  • High Load Capacity: Designed to handle heavy vehicle loads, essential for a major highway project like this.
  • Monolithic Design: The integrated design reduces the risk of component failure, ensuring long-term durability and lower maintenance costs.
  • Efficient Water Management: The 200mm-wide channel is capable of handling large volumes of water, essential in areas prone to heavy rainfall, such as the North Island of New Zealand.
  • Ease of Installation: MEA Drain systems are designed for straightforward installation, minimising disruption during the construction phase.

Impact on the Project

The installation of the MEA Drain system plays a vital role in ensuring the longevity of the new highway by preventing water damage to the road structure. With the terrain’s natural water flow needing careful management, this drainage system ensures that water is efficiently directed away from the road, reducing the risk of erosion and flooding.

By mid-2025, the new Manawatū Tararua Highway will not only provide a more direct route but will also stand as a resilient, modern infrastructure piece. Jaybro is proud to have been a part of this essential project, contributing to the safety and durability of a vital connection for North Island drivers.
