Fortress Fencing protects stockpiles at Westport Riverfront

Temporary fencing keeps this site safe, ready for a striking new pedestrian bridge

The Project:

New Zealand’s Buller District Council has green-lighted a new 29-metre long steel truss pedestrian bridge for Westport.

Crossing the rail corridor near the town centre, it is designed to connect the community to the waterfront over the existing railway.

This project will help showcase the river, Westport’s greatest natural asset, as well as forming part of the larger $18M Pounamou Pathway hubs project that will showcase Maori culture specific to the region.

This project is being delivered for Buller District Council with funding from New Zealand’s Provincial Growth Fund.

The challenges:

The project is in the early stages with the bridge being prefabricated off site whilst site preparation work happens alongside the river.

Geotechnical work will soon be undertaken to stabilise the footings for the ends of the bridge, including civil works such as levelling the area and installing a crushed gravel base

However, before any on-site work could begin, the contractor needed to erect temporary site fencing, restricting the construction zone for safety yet still allowing controlled access to authorised personnel.
