Coir Logs for Wirraway residential wetland construction
The Project
Jaybro had the opportunity to supply construction giant Daracon for their development of the Wirraway residential area on behalf of Defence Housing Australia. This $40 million subdivision project, involved various construction tasks, including earthworks, retaining walls, road and stormwater drainage, utilities work, and landscaping. The project site had a unique feature—a natural water corridor adjacent to the subdivision, which required protection during and after construction. To address this, Daracon used our Coir Logs from as silt barriers for the wetland areas.
The Challenge
The Wirraway subdivision's elevated location presented a challenge for Daracon during the construction phases, particularly when dealing with the drainage corridor in wet weather conditions. They had to excavate 1500 sqm of fill from the corridor and ensure its proper treatment. Moreover, with the construction of 511 lots spanning 58 hectares, it was crucial to effectively manage the significant volume of construction silt to safeguard the natural wetland environment.
After completing the construction phase, a subsequent inspection revealed the need for additional protection of the wetland banks against silt and sediment. Recognising the importance of addressing this issue, the project managers reached out to our team again. Together, they determined that the installation of long borders of coir logs would serve as an effective barrier to protect the sensitive wetland environment.
Our Solution
Jaybro provided 285 COIRmasta Coir Logs to Daracon, offering an environmentally friendly solution for redirecting the flow of silt. To secure the coir logs in position, we also supplied Daracon with a substantial quantity of 450mm timber pegs. The versatility of COIRmasta Coir Logs proved invaluable, as they could be used to construct check structures, manage changes in stream flow velocity, shape channels, and stabilise shorelines. In areas where tidal changes or wave movement were a concern, the coir logs could be stacked to create a natural barrier.
Manufactured from 100% coconut fiber compacted into an outer mesh of bristle coir twine, our coir logs serve as a natural planting medium for vegetation. These logs are entirely biodegradable, with a lifespan of up to 5 years and complete degradation occurring within 5 - 10 years. With options available in 3m lengths and diameters of 200mm or 300mm, the COIRmasta Coir Logs provided by Jaybro offered a sustainable and effective solution for the protection of the Wirraway residential area's wetland environment.
