Class Ratings for Precast Concrete Stormwater Pits
Class Ratings for Precast Concrete Stormwater Pits
Jaybro Civil offers precast concrete stormwater products made in our purpose built factory, as well as stocking a large range of speciality drainage products.
Following is information on the different class ratings of precast concrete pits, in accordance with the Australian Standard.
Precast Concrete Class Ratings
The Australian Standard for Access Covers and Grates (AS/NZS3996:2006) sets out a series of load classifications based on the anticipated load they need to withstand.
Access covers and grates are designated by classes A, B, C, D, E, F and G according to load capacities set out in the table below. This table is an extract from the Standard.
These classes range from extra light duty Class A products which are suitable for pedestrians and cyclist areas only, through to extra heavy duty Class G. These heavy duty precast concrete elements can withstand very high wheel loading, up to 30,000 kg, and are generally for airport runways.
Notes:
1. Nominal wheel loads are given as a guide only. Consideration should be given to the type, size and pneumatic pressure of the load applied.
2. Class B design loads exceed AS5100.2 requirements for footway loading.
3. Class D design loads exceed AS5100.2 requirements for a W80 wheel load.
4. Class C loads are based on an intermediate load.
5. The serviceability load is set at 2/3 of the ultimate limit state design load.
6. A force of 1kN approximately equal to 100kg.
Stormwater Pit Classes – Which One Do You Need?
The appropriate class for a cover or grate depends on the location of the installation. The nominal wheel loading in kilograms as well as the kilonewtons of force (kN) that the location has to withstand will provide an indication of which precast concrete class you should choose for your job.
Specifics of the location should be taken into consideration when selecting the right cover or grate. The speed of traffic, wheel type and the physical position should all be assessed. Your engineering specifications will indicate the appropriate class of product is selected for your project.
Standards Approved Precast Concrete Pits
It’s important to use compliant precast concrete products to ensure excellent performance on site.
The risk of using non-compliant precast products can have serious repercussions. Installing precast concrete pits that do not comply with the standard can lead to a reduction in life span, resulting in additional works to replace defective pits. Additionally, pits that are not load tested properly may fail under normal operational loads.
Jaybro supplies precast concrete products that are manufactured to Australian Standards. Produced in a purpose built facility to high standards.
When you specify Jaybro’s precast concrete pits and grates you can be sure you are receiving a high quality, rigorously tested, Standards approved product. For example, Jaybro’s precast stormwater pits are engineered to Class D wheel loading and constructed from concrete with a minimum compressive strength of 40MPa.
Jaybro Precast Concrete Range
Pits are manufactured in common footprints to meet the design requirements of most stormwater networks, with exact heights and pipe penetrations.
Jaybro manufactures pits, risers, lintels, kerb entry units, headwalls, batter outlets and subsoil boxes. Corresponding cast iron covers and grates in concrete surrounds are also available, also manufactured in accordance with AS 3996.
Additionally, we can supply precast concrete ITS pits for electricity junctions, complete with bell mouth couplings. Please contact our friendly team for more information.
