Case Study: Jaybro Pits and Grates for Victorian Primary School Project

Galvanised heel proof grates make for a safer car park.

A new Catholic primary school in Victoria is under construction within the master-planned Merrifield Estate community.

Located in Mickleham, north of Melbourne, the school is due to open to students from Term 1 2022. Now in the final stages of construction, the school car park area is very close to completion with the car park area one of the final parts to be built.

As part of this project, efficient and safe drainage was required including the addition of heel proof grates which feature a fine steel mesh that prevents high heels and small objects from becoming stuck or falling through in the grate. This was a key factor for this project, ensuring pedestrian, bike and wheelchair safety around the school.

Our solution

The contractor provided a list of the required items and the Jaybro underground civil team was able to assist, supplying all the necessary pits and grates quickly and efficiently.

Jaybro’s range of galvanised heel proof grates come in a wide range of styles, including long trench style grates, standard galvanised grates and hinged style grates and frames.

Designed for use in areas with high pedestrian traffic, sump grates are available with casting handles to allow them to be cast into pavement areas above the pit, or with hinged frames to allow for easy maintenance access.

Manufactured and tested to meet AS3996.2006, our grates are available in Light duty Class B as well as heavy-duty Class D. With extra strength and corrosion resistance thanks to hot-dip galvanising, they offer safer installation due to their low frame and grate weight.

A range of accompanying precast concrete pits was also supplied for this Mickleham project. These 40mpa wet cast concrete pits are modular and flexible making them suitable for a range of drainage applications in residential and commercial developments, sporting fields, and civil projects.

Featuring steel reinforcement that meets AS4671 and polypropylene fibre reinforcement, each pit features lifting eyes for safety and knock out walls to suit a range of pipe sizes.
